FORMER Cuestars Seniors Tour player Lawrence Millington has won his first tournament in New Zealand.

And he reckons this success will place him in the top-30 of the country’s rankings.

Lawrence beat Neil Whalley 3-0 in the final of the 2020 Bay of Plenty Billiards & Snooker Association Open, which attracted a strong field of 41.

Speaking from the other side of the world, he said: “I struggled badly on Saturday, should have lost a group match but somehow cleared up to win, and was 2-0 down in the quarters to Neil Cameron, who was a pro in the 90s.

“I played well in the semis and final with a 90 in the first frame.”

A change of format means Millington can now enter 16 ranking events plus the North Island tournament and the NZ Open. He is only barred from the nationals.

Before Christmas, he lost 4-0 in a final to the Oceania Under-21 Champion Cody Turner.

After ten breaks of 40 or more, including a 93, in ten frames, he had played himself out by the Sunday afternoon.

Millington practises in Wellington with Cody and Harry Haenga, who once made a 147 from the break.
