Waters thrilled to collect first trophy

A KING’S Somborne teenager was “thrilled” to collect his first snooker trophy and now wants “many more”.

Toby Waters scaled new heights by winning his first Cuestars Under-21 Bronze Tour event at Fareham Snooker Club.

The 14-year-old, who hadn’t been past the last-eight in his previous four events on the junior circuit, prevailed 2-0 against Ben Taylor-Jenkins (Hedge End) in the final of the eighth leg.

He clinched the first frame on the black and the second on the pink.

“It was a really tough game,” said Waters. “Both frames went down to the final few balls.

“I’m thrilled. Hopefully, there will be many more.”

The frame-of-the-day award has to go to the group-stage match between Tyler Heard (Watford) and Jia Zeng (Brighton & Hove). Heard recorded his highest break of 37 – and lost!

Rankings leader Sam Perkins (New Milton) maintained his 17-point lead over Alex Scotney (Sutton) as both players made quarter-final exits.

Jack Miller (Thatcham) and Charlie Ings (Salisbury) both lost third-frame deciders in the semi-finals.

The event was sponsored by snookerdad Ian Walter, simply to support grass-roots snooker, and Fareham SC.

Chandlers Ford Snooker Club hosts the ninth leg of ten on Sunday, April 6.
