Just a dad and his lad enjoying a game of snooker
EIGHT-year-old Jamie Wilson’s 20 clearance to the black secured the 56th Family Tournament at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club for the pint-sized potter and his dad Steve.
The Wilsons (pictured) ended the five-hour competition, formerly known as Dads and Lads, with a 2-0 victory over Mike and Martin Trigg.
Tree-surgeon Steve insisted the result came as a complete shock to the Portsmouth pair.
“We didn’t come down here with any expectations,” he said. “It was a big surprise.”
But the 32-year-old did admit: “We both wanted to win.”
The Triggs, from East Wellow, had trailed by 13 points on the colours in the first frame. Martin smacked in a long black to force a re-spot – which Jamie cut into the middle bag.
Level into the colours in the next, 16-year-old Mike fouled twice while attempting a snooker escape and young Jamie stepped in for his title-winning break.
“It was a really nice clearance in terms of keeping the pressure off by getting the cue-ball where he needed to get it,” declared Steve.
“We had quite tough matches all the way through. The final was the hardest game.
“Me and Jamie played quite well together. It’s a good partnership. We’re quite chuffed to get our names on the Dads and Lads (trophy).”
Jamie, who finished 11th on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour last season, reckoned his dad played “quite good”.
In the semi-finals, the Triggs had eased past three-time champions Alex and Jim Everett while the Wilsons saw off Olly and Ian Clark from Gosport.
Luke and Mark Beebe accounted for Luke and Paul Oliver in the Plate final.
In the Plate semi-finals, Luke Beebe, 11, compiled a personal best 30 break in their victory over Connor and Mark Benzey, the 2001 Town Champion.
Mark Beebe wrapped up the win with a “speciality” fluked pink.
