England call-up for 13-year-old
A 13-YEAR-OLD Cuestars Gold Tour player has been called up for the England under-16 team.Mickey Joyce (pictured) will don his three-lions waistcoat with pride at the Home Internationals at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds, on August 9-11.
The teenager, whose highest break is 83, will compete on the international stage for the first time after winning promotion to the EASB Premier Junior Tour.Dad Eamon said: “It was a really proud moment. It’s fantastic. “He’s definitely deserved it over this season. He’s played really well at the bigger tournaments. We’re really pleased for him.”One quarter-final, two semi-finals, one losing final and a win in the sixth and last event on home tables at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club clinched the runners-up spot on the Regional Junior Tour South. Joyce didn’t enter the second leg.
Sponsored by Surrey-based Falcon Pools and The Academy in his home town of Basingstoke, the sharp-shooting youngster is a five-time Eastleigh & District Under-19 champion. He won the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour championship two weeks after his tenth birthday in 2013, topped the Silver Tour rankings the following season but has yet to progress past the quarter-finals on the Gold Tour.
Elsewhere, 12-year-old Jamie Wilson, the English Under-14 Championship runner-up, has been invited to Malta in January for the European Under-17 Snooker Open.
