Oliver Sykes is the Chandlers Ford SC champion
OLIVER Sykes is the new club champion at Chandlers Ford Snooker Club.
The 16-year-old scrapped out a 3-1 victory over John Hunter in an enthralling final on Easter Monday.
John was on course for a 2-0 lead but snookered himself behind the blue on the last red on a run of 44. Into the colours and Oliver took on a shot that not many others would have attempted. He screwed the blue from near the side cushion into the yellow pocket and landed plum on the pink.
John took the lead in the third frame with a 47 break but, again, Oliver won on the black. Both players had chances in the fourth.
Oliver, who pocketed £100 in prize money, is the youngest player to land the prestigious title.
John, one of the hardest players to beat on the south’s amateur circuit, had the consolation of the £50 runner-up prize plus £10 for the day’s highest break of 112 made against Neil Carroll in the last-eight.
O’Shay Scott progressed the furthest of the seven under-14s in the draw. The English Under-14 Championship finalist was eventually knocked out in the quarter-finals by Oliver, the English Under-21 Championship finalist.
A total of 25 breaks of 50 or more were recorded by the high-quality field of 21.
