Double delight for Channel Islander Greier
CHANNEL Islander Archie Greier was “tired but happy” at the end of a momentous weekend in his snooker career.
The nine-year-old from Jersey claimed his first winner’s trophy on the Cuestars Under-21 Bronze Tour in south London.
And the previous day he recorded a new high break of 34 in the Open Series at Chandlers Ford Snooker Club.
Greier was fearless as he wrapped up a 2-0 victory over 17-year-old Jack Squires (Gosport) in the Bronze final at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon.
Needing the last three colours in the second frame, he potted the blue with the rest and then smacked in a long pink and a long black.
Faced with the final black, Greier said to himself: “I’m just going to get it” but he added that he was “relieved” to see it disappear into the pocket.
Greier, who attends Samarès School and is based at the First Tower Billiards & Snooker Club in St Helier, works with Aaron Canavan – the 2018 World Seniors champion.
Talking about Canavan, Greier said: “He’s helped me with my safety, matchplay, basically everything.”
Greier was last man standing from a massive field of 31. He won all four matches in the round-robin group stages and then defeated Archie Lyon (East Sussex), Oliver Donnelly (London) and Oliver Li (Brighton) in the knockout to reach his first final.
There was a touch of déjà vu about the Bronze winner’s weekend. Last month, Noah Gartell, from the Isle of Wight, recorded his highest break on the Saturday and then beat Squires in the final of the previous leg in Salisbury.
Gartell remains top of the rankings. Squires is one point adrift in second place. Beaten semi-finalist Lee Clayden (Chingford) and Archie Light (Lymington) are joint third.
Chandlers Ford Snooker Club hosts the third leg of ten on Sunday, November 5.
