First winner’s trophy gives Woodward pole position

CHRISTOPHER Woodward is in pole position on the Cuestars Under-21 Bronze Snooker Tour rankings after collecting his first winner’s trophy.

The 13-year-old ended a ten-hour day by overcoming first-time finalist Dylan Denieffe (Streatham) 2-0 to clinch the third leg on home tables at Chandlers Ford Snooker Club.

Woodward had won all of his five matches in the round-robin group stages and prevailed in third-frame deciders in both of his earlier knockout games.

The elated teenager said: “It’s brilliant. I came so close in Salisbury a couple of months ago.

“A made a 34 break at the start of the first frame and that boosted my confidence. I think that helped for the rest of the match.

“Towards the start of the day, I was worried I wasn’t playing brilliantly. I didn’t make any breaks (of 20 or more) until the quarters. I just wasn’t playing as well as I usually do.”

Looking back to his epic battle with Chandlers Ford clubmate Lennon Savage (Southampton) in the semi-finals, Woodward said: “It was one of the best matches I’ve ever played.

“The scores were tied (in the third-frame decider) with the last three colours on the table. We were playing for ages, a mega safety battle. The tension was massive. It was an incredible game.”

Leg-one winner Ellise Scott (Eastleigh), who lost in the quarter-finals to Denieffe, is second in the rankings. Savage is third.

Oliver Li (Brighton) progressed to the last-four for the first time but was knocked out 2-0 by Denieffe, who was making only his second appearance on the junior circuit.

There were 24 runners, split into four round-robin groups of six, for the event sponsored by Chandlers Ford Snooker Club and Simon Cocks Catering.
