Glory for Gus Walker in Wiltshire
BRIGHTON break-builder Gus Walker has claimed his first winner’s trophy on the Cuestars junior snooker circuit.
The 12-year-old defeated home player Tom McEvoy 2-0 in the final of the opening leg of the 2024/25 Under-21 Silver Tour at Salisbury Snooker Club.
Walker reckoned he had a good chance of glory during the excursion to Wiltshire and admitted he was “on it” from the start.
“Some good Silver players have moved up to Gold and I thought that if things have shifted I might have a better chance of doing well,” he said.
“I was on it today, straight off the bat.
“I feel good. It was a long day and I’m happy to come out with the win.”
Turning to his opponent, Walker added: “It was a good match. Tom played well, obviously. Congratulations to him.”
Walker, who is based at the Castle Snooker Club in Brighton, made his Cuestars Bronze Tour debut in January, 2022, in Coulsdon. This is his second season on the Silver Tour.
Meanwhile, McEvoy must wait a little longer for his first winner’s trophy. The 15-year-old from Warminster, who already has one Bronze runner-up trophy, was making his appearance in a Silver final.
Newly promoted Jack Squires (Gosport), last season’s Bronze rankings champion, and Rayan El Qmache (London) both proved they can compete at this level by reaching the semi-finals of the event sponsored by Salisbury SC.
