Murphy pockets £500 in high-quality Super Series leg in London

AIDAN Murphy is £500 richer after winning the latest Cuestars Joe Perry Under-21 Super Series tournament in south London.

The 20-year-old from Bristol beat first-time finalist O’Shay Scott (Eastleigh) 3-1 to clinch the second leg at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon.

Murphy, who made his Cuestars debut over ten years ago on the Under-21 Bronze Tour in Salisbury, moves up to second place in the rankings.

Rankings leader Oliver Sykes (Chandler’s Ford) recorded the day’s highest break of 119 against John Donovan (Camden Town) in the last-eight and replaces Londoner Ronnie Sullivan in pole position for the £1-a-point series high-break prize sponsored by Shots Watford sports bar.

The ever-improving William Hurley (Rayleigh) put together a Cuestars personal best run of 94 against Zain Jeraj (Tooting) in the round-robin group stages.

Murphy made the day’s other century. A total of 36 breaks of 50 or more – including seven in the 90s – were chalked by the high-quality field, which included former professional Jamie Wilson (Havant), European Under-21 Championship runner-up Sykes and WSF Junior Championship finalist Kaylan Patel (Leicester). John Hunter said: “The standard was the highest so far.”

Although Murphy had booked a hotel room for the night before, hats off to Welsh international Zac Cosker for making a four-hour journey from his home in Bridgend to south London on the day.

Frames Sports Bar (framessportsbar.com) sponsored the event. The rankings winner after the three events receives a Q School place courtesy of Cuestars ambassador Joe Perry.

There are a few places available for the third and final leg on Saturday, April 19, at The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury. Entry to each event is £40. Entrants must be Cuestars members. To join Cuestars, it costs just £10 a season, go to www.cuestars.co.uk/membership-form.
