Third time lucky for Wong

IT WAS third time lucky for University of Southampton student Isaac Wong on the Cuestars Under-21 Bronze Tour.

After two successive runner-up trophies, the 20-year-old from Hong Kong was last man standing in the Pitman Training-sponsored tenth leg at Chandlers Ford Snooker Club.

Wong, who is studying education with a view to becoming a teacher, prevailed 2-0 against Christopher Woodward in the final.

He said: “I feel really relieved. I always fail at the last step. It’s really frustrating.

“Thankfully, today I played pretty well. I didn’t have a good start in the morning but after the group stage I started to play better.”

Woodward (Chandler’s Ford) clinched the runner-up spot in the rankings by beating newly-crowned champion Donnie Gola (Islington) 2-1 in the last-eight and third-placed William Hurley (Rayleigh) 2-0 in the semi-finals.

Gus Walker (Brighton) and Noah Gartell (Yarmouth, Isle of Wight) qualified from the massive entry of 31 for the quarter-finals for the first time.

Next up is the Cuestars Under-21 Gold, Silver and Bronze Championships with guest professional Joe Perry at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, May 21.
